Mental Wizard Update #1

Without good vision, it is far more of a challenge to learn. If you are already vision-affected and need glasses, you will already appreciate the difference that clear vision can make to your learning ability.

The Best Thing Your Can Do For Your Eyes

Your eyes work best when they are not stressed. There is a large component of vision which relies on "muscle." When this muscle becomes tired or weak, your vision will be affected.

This tension in your eyes will also tend to increase your overall tension and stress levels. This feeling in your eyes tends to make you focus on how tired/tense/stressed you feel.

A simple way to demonstrate this is to remember how irritable you feel when you have grit in your eyes, or they are just "itchy."

If you were to do push-ups all day, the muscles involved would soon become weaker and not function properly. If you rest and relax the push-up muscles when it is needed, then they continue to function.

    In terms of vision, from the time we open our eyes in the morning, to the time we close them at night, they are working. The focussing muscles are squeezing, relaxing, squeezing relaxing, both laterally and for depth. Some activities like reading, working on computers, attending lectures or driving a car make your eye muscles work even harder without a rest. {Just like doing continuous push-ups, or standing on your feet all day - the muscles will become tired and weaker, and will not work as effectively}

Lack of Rest Causes Further Problems

The result of this is that your vision may start to become blurry, you may find yourself "squinting" to see clearly. Over a period of time you may need to start wearing glasses to recover your clarity. With more time you may need more and more powerful lenses.

If this has not happened to you, you will definitely know someone that it has happened to. A possible answer is become aware of your eyes as part muscle, and as soon as they start to tire - GIVE THEM A LITTLE REST!

This is part of the "Bates Method", which makes many claims about the ability to correct and restore vision, using relaxation and specific exercises to improve the muscles of vision.

One of my best friends was able to stop his vision deterioration, and eventually improve it so as to escape from the "Coke-Bottle" glasses he used to wear. He did this with a paperback from his local bookshop. It required some brief daily exercises, and just under 12 months, to see normally again.

If you already have vision problems, rip down to your local library or bookshop and find out more. My eyes have always been great, but a philosophy or wisdom that can help them remain perfect is a good thing. The main thing is to recognize that your eyes are designed to work best when they are relaxed. [If you have to squint, your vision is not relaxed. You see more when you are relaxed.]

So at the first suspicion that your eyes are tiring, do this "exercise" which is called "palming."

    Palming

The purpose is palming is to allow the eyes to rest, and relax. Simply close your eyes, and place your hands over them, without making contact with your eyelids. The idea is to block out all of the light. There should be firm contact between hands and face, but none between hands and eyelids. [ie don't squash your eyes.]

You can support your elbows on a table or desk, so that there is no strain on your shoulders or neck.

The earlier you pick up the message from your eyes that they need a rest, the less time will be required to recover.

A good addition to basic palming is to consciously try to relax all of the muscles of the eye, behind the eye, the eyelids, the eyebrows, the forehead, the cheeks, the jaw. Feel waves of relaxation running down from the top of your head. You can picture black or any other colour, but just let the tension dissolve.

You will find that when you decrease the tension in your eyes, the total amount of tension in your whole body is also greatly reduced. Who doesn't need less stress?

If you have less than perfect vision, try a little experiment. Take your glasses off, and find an object you can see, but is a little blurry. Do palming for at least a minute [or two], letting all tension out, then look at the object again. Most people I have asked to do this experience an improvement. Even those with "normal" vision can usually see an improvement. TRY IT RIGHT NOW!!!

If you want to know more, read about "The Bates Method." One of the books on this topic I have is "The Bates Method" by Peter Mansfield, published by Optima [UK]in 1992. Very interesting reading.
